The blues live on whenever he is on stage. Also Tom Waits described the talented singer as sounding “like a big train is coming”. Because John Hammond is a name that rings out for anyone in love with the blues. He has been associated with some of the biggest artists of the ’60s, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, The Band and more. In fact, Hendrix was “discovered” while performing in Hammond’s band!
In 1991, Hammond brought us a fascinating TV documentary in the UK called “The Search for Robert Johnson,” where he dove into the life and legacy of the legendary Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, sharing some amazing stories along the way.
Hammond and the incredibly talented songwriter Tom Waits share a deep and lasting friendship, often celebrating their bond through music. Hammond has been known to cover Waits’ songs from time to time. In 2001, he showed his admiration for Waits with the release of “Wicked Grin,” an album filled with Waits’ tunes, except for one special traditional spiritual, “I Know I’ve Been Changed.” Waits not only contributed by playing guitar and adding backing vocals but also took the helm as the album’s producer.
In 2003, Hammond came out with “Ready for Love,” an album produced by David Hidalgo from Los Lobos, featuring a mix of songs including one by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “The Spider and the Fly.”
His 2009 album, “Rough & Tough,” earned a nod as a nominee for the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2010, showcasing Hammond’s continued passion and dedication to his craft.
And in 2011, the Blues Foundation recognized Hammond’s incredible contributions to blues music by inducting him into the Blues Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor for such a talented artist.
