  • Roy Rogers – King Biskit

    Roy Rogers – King Biskit

    Roy Rogers

Rogers was born in California in 1950. He started playing the guitar when he was 12 years old. He already fell in love with the blues, and his masters became Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and B.B. King. These influences can be heard in his music to this day. Rogers’ blues is very rhythmical. But at the same time sophisticated, mainly from the guitar technique. Rogers also plays slide on electric and acoustic guitars. However, instrumental fireworks are given with such grace and lightness that they do not obscure the most important: good fun.

He plays so rhythmically that people dance even with his solos when other instruments fall silent. He sings sparingly because he feels primarily a guitarist.

Rogers has many of his own albums. He is a very eclectic musician, easily moving through various styles and musical registers. Roy Rogers is a well-known producer: he has worked on CDs of such stars as John Lee Hooker (with whom he also toured a lot) and Ramblin ‘Jack Elliott. He participated in the field of film music (including “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“) and participated in the recording of sensational music for Dennis Hopper’s film “The Hot Spot.” In the studio, the greatest ones met: Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker and Taj Mahal. Rogers played slide guitar in 10 of 13 compositions.

Many guitarists try to slide techniques, but real masters can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Roy Rogers is certainly one of them.

  • Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa – Black Coffee

Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa – Black Coffee

Official video for Black Coffee from the Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa album Black Coffee.

Traditionally, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa present their own versions of classic recordings mainly from the 1960s and 1970s.

Their first album “Do not Explain” (2011) contained covers of among others Ray Charles, Tom Waits, Melody Gardot, Billy Holiday, Etta James and Aretha Franklin.

The album “Seesaw” (2013) brought interpretations of songs from the repertoire of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot and Nina Simone.

For “Black Coffee” their prepared own versions of recordings of Edgar Winter, Ray Charles, Etta James, Steve Marriot, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee.

The title track “Black Coffee” is an interpretation of the classic song, from 1972, of Ike and Tina Turner.

Here are the details of the “Black Coffee” album:

    1. “Give It Everything You Got”
    2. “Damn Your Eyes”
    3. “Black Coffee”
    4. “Lullaby Of The Leaves”
    5. “Why Don’t You Do Right”
    6. “Saved”
    7. “Sitting On Top Of The World”
    8. “Joy”
    9. “Soul On Fire”
    10. “Addicted”
    11. “Baby I Love You” (bonus track).

How did the musical collaboration between Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa come about?

It was a few years ago in Amsterdam: the guitarist, fascinated by Beth’s performance, asked her husband, and also the manager, whether there was a chance to cooperate with Hart. Bonamassa wanted to jam a bit with the expressive singer and – in case of success – record the material. We know the rest of this story very well. Its subsequent chapters, albums “Don’t Explain” and “Seesaw” were appreciated by critics and fans, and the second one was also nominated for a Grammy.

Black Coffee comes from Ike and Tina Turner’s album – Feel Good from 1972, but the arrangement of the song is more reminiscent of a cover of this song performed by Humble Pie in 1973. The guitar parts here are almost identical to the Hart and Bonamassa versions. Regardless of these musical/historical references, however, it is simply thrilling, getting you on your feet better than the strongest coffee, a track that needed refreshing, and for this great job, Hart and Bonamassa deserve great praise.

Tinsley Ellis plays at Key West Theater May 12

At 14 years old, Tinsley Ellis heard BB King at the Marco Polo hotel in Miami Beach and never looked back. By the next year, he was immersing himself in Muddy Waters, Billy Preston, Howlin’ Wolf and Albert Collins. The Blues itself turns a century old this decade and Ellis has been a part of the movement for four decades. Ellis describes his style as a Southern Blues Rock and will be debuting his 19th album, “Red Clay Soul,” this spring. The album is heartfelt and true to his Georgia roots and “has a serious Southern vibe and speaks of the soul of the region.” We asked the Ellis how he feels continuing the Blues tradition in the 21st century and about playing Key West Theater on Thursday, May 12. Big-name musicians unite for 2nd album, 1st tour

So-called super groups have often failed to live up to the resumes of their big-name musician members.

Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg would probably resist being called a super group, but their band, The Rides, certainly qualifies for that billing. Far from being a disappointment, the music on its first two albums has its three core members feeling this isn’t some short-lived vanity project. Read more…
