I Love Blues Guitar

Tommy Castro – Nasty Habits

Grease, Groove, and Good Times: How Tommy Castro Became My Go-To Blues Rock Soul Machine

The first time I heard Tommy Castro, I was driving down a stretch of highway with nothing but the sunset, the blues, and the kind of headspace that only music can reach.
His song “Nasty Habits” came on, and I swear, I nearly pulled the car over just to soak it in.

The grit in his voice, the fire in his guitar, the tightness of the groove—it all hit me at once.
It was blues, but with funk in the hips, soul in the heart, and a little West Coast swagger for good measure.

That was the day Tommy Castro stopped being just another blues name to me. He became one of my personal blues heroes.

Bay Area Blues with a Southern Soul

Tommy Castro grew up in San Jose, California, surrounded by BB King, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and the sweet, sweaty sounds of Stax Records.
But this wasn’t your typical Chicago-style, hard-luck blues. This was California soul-fried blues—blues you can dance to, cry to, or both at the same time.

Castro came up grinding it out in clubs and bars, eventually forming The Tommy Castro Band in the early ‘90s.
Since then, he’s become one of the hardest-working men in blues, constantly touring, recording, and evolving—all without losing the heart and honesty that make his music so damn good.

The Sound: Blues-Rock with Soul Power and Street Swagger

Tommy’s sound is a gumbo of groove: gritty blues, Memphis soul, San Francisco funk, and old-school R&B, all tied together by tasteful guitar work and that raspy, soulful voice.

He’s not trying to dazzle you with 100 notes per second—he’s here to move you. To groove you. And man, does he.

Vocally, he’s got that working-man warmth—somewhere between Delbert McClinton and Otis Redding. When he sings about love gone wrong, you feel it. When he sings about hitting the road, you want to pack a bag.

Albums That Kept Me Coming Back

Tommy Castro has released more than a dozen albums, and every single one has flavor. But these are the ones that stayed on repeat for me:

  • 🎸 Painkiller (2007) – Produced by John Porter, this one’s full of deep cuts and features Bonnie Raitt on a killer duet.
  • 🔥 The Devil You Know (2014) – A rockier, edgier album. “Greedy” and “Two Steps Forward” rip hard.
  • 💿 Method to My Madness (2015) – More personal and emotional. Great songwriting.
  • Stompin’ Ground (2017) – Back to his roots. Big horns, big heart.
  • 🎶 Killin’ It – Live (2019) – Captures the live Tommy Castro vibe: loose, loud, and full of soul.
  • 💥 A Bluesman Came to Town (2021) – A storytelling concept album about a kid chasing the blues dream. One of his most ambitious and satisfying records.

Seeing Him Live: Sweat, Smiles, and Serious Soul

If you ever get the chance to see Tommy Castro live—GO. No questions asked.
I saw him a few years ago at a blues fest, and it was joy from the first downbeat to the last encore. The man plays like it’s his last night on Earth—every time.

The horns are punchy. The rhythm section is airtight. And Tommy himself? He owns the stage.
He jokes with the crowd, he slides into the audience mid-solo, he belts out every note like it’s gospel.
It’s not a concert. It’s a party with a purpose.

Why Tommy Castro Is a Bluesman for All of Us

Tommy Castro isn’t flashy, and he’s not trying to be a legend.
He’s just one of those rare artists who consistently makes great, honest, feel-good blues music—and plays it like he’s grateful for every chance to do so.

He bridges old-school and new-school. He rocks hard, but never loses the groove. He’s got soul, humor, and serious skill—and he’s one of the most dependable live performers you’ll ever see.
