5 Songs That Prove Keith Richards Is a Blues Guitarist

Keith Richards, affectionately known as Keef by Rolling Stones fans, is often celebrated for his role in shaping rock and roll. Yet, at his core, Keith is a blues guitarist. His style is steeped in the blues tradition, with a deep emotional resonance that connects directly to the roots of American music. For those who love the blues and the Stones, here are five tracks that showcase Keith Richards’ profound connection to the blues.

    1. “Love in Vain” (Let It Bleed, 1969)

“Love in Vain” is a Robert Johnson classic reimagined by the Stones. Keith’s guitar work on this track is pure blues. He captures the haunting, melancholic tone with a simplicity that speaks volumes. The way he plays, letting each note linger as if savoring its taste, shows his deep respect for the blues masters. This song is a testament to Keith’s ability to channel the spirit of the blues through his guitar.

    2. “Midnight Rambler” (Let It Bleed, 1969)

“Midnight Rambler” is a journey through dark, bluesy terrains. Keith’s guitar drives the song, with riffs that are both gritty and fluid. He uses the guitar to tell a story, building tension and releasing it in a way that is quintessentially blues. The energy he brings to this live favorite demonstrates his prowess in melding rock with the blues to create something electrifying.

    3. “You Gotta Move” (Sticky Fingers, 1971)

This song is a cover of a Mississippi Fred McDowell number. Keith’s slide guitar on “You Gotta Move” is a direct nod to the Delta blues style. The raw, stripped-down guitar work highlights his ability to adopt and adapt traditional blues techniques. It’s Keith going back to the basics, proving how grounded he is in the true essence of the blues.

    4. “Thru and Thru” (Voodoo Lounge, 1994)

However a later track, “Thru and Thru” shows Keith hasn’t lost his touch with the blues. Here, his guitar sings with a plaintive, soulful voice. The track features Keith on lead vocals, and his guitar complements his voice in a way that only a true bluesman can achieve. It’s a more reflective blues, showcasing his maturity and depth as a musician.

    5. “Slipping Away” (Steel Wheels, 1989)

On “Slipping Away,” Keith takes the spotlight with both vocals and a gentle, poignant guitar performance. The song has a laid-back blues feel, with Keith’s guitar providing a soft, melancholic backdrop. It’s a quieter kind of blues but no less impactful. This song highlights his ability to evoke emotion through subtlety and nuance in his guitar playing.

Keith Richards’ contribution to the Rolling Stones and rock music is immense, but his roots in the blues are undeniable. These five songs are just a glimpse of how deeply embedded the blues are in Keith’s musical soul. For fans over 60, these tracks are not just music; they are a powerful reminder of the blues’ enduring influence on one of the greatest guitarists of our time.

I even made a film, Deep Blues, where I went to Mississippi and recorded with some legendary players such as R.L. Burnside and Jesse Mae Hemphill. Last year I heard something I thought I would never hear: a British white girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!” (Taylor was just 16 years old at that time.) Stewart was so impressed with her playing and musicianship that he asked her to accompany his supergroup, D.U.P. They touring Europe in 2002. Taylor returned to the studio a year later, once again with Jim Gaines, to record her sophomore release, 2010’s Diamonds in the Dirt. In 2012, Taylor joined Annie Lennox on-stage to perform for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in front of Buckingham Palace. She followed up the performance with the release of her third album, Almost Always Never. The live album, Songs from the Road, appeared in 2013, followed by The Dirty Truth the following year. Emmanuel had said that even at a young age he was fascinated by Chet Atkins’s musical style (sometimes referred to as Travis picking) of playing bass lines, chords, melodies, and harmonies simultaneously using the thumb and fingers of the right hand, achieving a dynamic range of sound from the instrument. Although Emmanuel’s playing incorporates a multitude of musical influences and styles, including jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk and rock, this type of country finger-style playing is at the core of his technique. • T-Bone Walker – Goin’ to Chicago

T-Bone Walker – Goin’ to Chicago

    T-Bone Walker

Aaron Thibeaux “T-Bone” Walker (May 28, 1910 – March 16, 1975) was a critically acclaimed American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who was an influential pioneer and innovator of the jump blues and electric blues sound. In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at number 67 on their list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

Walker was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Chuck Berry named Walker and Louis Jordan as his main influences. B.B. King cites hearing Walker’s “Stormy Monday” record as his inspiration for getting an electric guitar. Walker was admired by Jimi Hendrix who imitated Walker’s trick of playing the guitar with his teeth. “Stormy Monday” was a favorite live number for The Allman Brothers Band.

As well as being a remarkable musician, Walker was one of the great showmen. Even in the Forties, he would perform stage acrobatics such as the splits. Walker did almost everything that Jimi Hendrix did later, from exploiting feedback to playing the guitar behind his back to playing his guitar with his teeth.

Listen afresh and you will hear Walker had a sound and playing style all his own; unique phrasing with smooth and melodic staccato runs. He played solos that brought the guitar out of its role as an accompanying, rhythm-oriented instrument. He was one of the first musicians who proved that a guitar could go head-to-head with brass, pianos, and woodwinds as a legitimate solo instrument.

T-Bone Walker’s single-string solos influenced blues players like B.B. King and such rockers as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

    As Pete Welding wrote:

T-Bone Walker is the fundamental source of the modern urban style of playing and singing the blues. The blues was different before he came onto the scene, and it hasn’t been the same since.

    Lyrics

A long time ago I was in love with a girl and I think I took that love a little too far

You can see the cigarette burns on the wall
And all the empty bottles in the hall
If the water gets too rough you know who to call, don’t ya baby?
And I can see the way he looks in your eyes
A soul so lost with his foolish lies
If ya even have to ask, baby I’m surprised, I’m so surprised

Sometimes you got to leave your lover
If ya wanna learn to love again

    Little black flies
    Flying all around the kitchen
    Little black flies
    Broken wings and bad decisions

Well, here I am and it’s another night
It’s two am and I can still hear y’all fight
I walk up the stairs lit up by the old porch light it’s burning bright

I open the door and I bust on in
I can tell right away from the bruises on your skin
Everything changed when I saw that gun in his hand and I don’t understand

A shot rang out in the name of love
And I fell right down in a pool of blood

    Little black flies
    Flyin’ all around the kitchen
    Little black flies
    Broken wings and bad decisions

    Little black flies
    Flyin’ all around the kitchen
    Little black flies
    Broken wings and bad decisions
