About Muireann Bradley
(Watch the video below)
If you’re a fan of country blues, ragtime, folk blues and roots music, you might have heard of Muireann Bradley, a 17-year-old fingerpicking guitarist and singer from Ireland. But if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. Muireann Bradley is one of the most talented and authentic young musicians in the acoustic guitar scene today, and she has just released her debut album, I Kept These Old Blues, on Tompkins Square Records.
Muireann Bradley started playing guitar at the age of 13, inspired by her father, who is also a musician, and by listening to the records of Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis, and other blues pioneers. She taught herself how to play by watching YouTube videos and practicing for hours every day. She soon developed a remarkable fingerstyle technique and a deep understanding of the blues tradition.
Muireann Bradley’s repertoire consists of classic songs from the 1920s and 1930s, which she sings and plays with great conviction and emotion. She doesn’t try to imitate the original recordings, but rather adds her own personality and flair to them. She also writes her own songs in the same style, showing her creativity and originality.
Muireann Bradley’s debut album, I Kept These Old Blues, features 12 tracks of pure acoustic bliss. She plays three different guitars on the album: a Gibson LG-2 reissue, a Waterloo WL-S Deluxe, and a Waterloo WL-14X. The album was recorded live in one take at St Anne’s Church of Ireland churchyard in Ballyshannon, with no overdubs or edits. The result is a raw and honest sound that captures Muireann Bradley’s passion and skill.
Some of the highlights of the album include Reverend Gary Davis’ version of “Candyman”, Blind Blake’s “Police Dog Blues”, Memphis Minnie’s “When the Levee Breaks”, and Muireann Bradley’s own composition, “Sligo River Blues”. You can hear her playing these songs and more on her YouTube channel, where she has over 12K subscribers and millions of views. She also recently performed on the Late Late Show and on Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s Sessions, where she gave some insights into the history and meaning of the songs.
Muireann Bradley is a rising star in the acoustic guitar world, and I Kept These Old Blues is a must-have album for any blues lover. She is not only keeping these old blues alive, but also giving them new life and energy. She is proof that age doesn’t matter when it comes to music, as long as you have talent, dedication, and love for what you do.
