Tidewater Virginia blues musicians – guitarist John Cephas and harmonica player Phil Wiggins – play a version of Richmond Blues (circa 1989). Video is courtesy of Houseparty Productions, Takoma Park, Maryland.

    John Cephas and Phil Wiggins

Cephas and Wiggins were known for playing acoustic Piedmont blues. This kind of blues is not as much celebrated as raw Delta Blues of Mississipi or electric Chicago Blues. Piedmont blues is jaunty and melodic, often with elements of ragtime and complex fingerpicking.

Cephas and Wiggins were both born in Washington D.C. They first met at a jam session at the Smithsonian’s Festival of American Folklife in 1976 and played together in Wilbert “Big Chief” Ellis’s band. When Ellis died, they decided to continue as a duo.

Their first U.S. release, the album Dog Days of August, was issued by Flying Fish Records in 1986. Two more albums followed from Flying Fish. After they left the label, they released one album for the New York-based Chesky Records and four albums for Alligator Records. They released the album Richmond Blues on Folkways Records in 2008.

Until the late 1980s, Cephas made his primary living from carpentry, playing music on the side. In the 1990s, he became a professional musician, sometimes earning money by teaching classes and workshops.

Wes Jeans – Forest Of The Pine

Striking like a flash of lightning out of the piney wood region of East Texas, Wes Jeans ranks as one of the “Top Young Gun Guitar Players” – Guitar Player Magazine, March 2004. Wes delivers a soul-drenched mix of high voltage, rockin’ Texas Blues. Wes commands the stage from start to finish and opens with a spirit of intensity that will surely grab you with his grinding rhythms and stinging leads allowing you a deep look into Wes Jeans’ Marshall, TX roots.
I really aren’t sure the amount of fans Wes has, but also for those entering into him who have heard his studio work, I’ll claim every song on below that shows up on his studio albums (as well as there aren’t lots of) is produced much better right here.

For basic rock fans, this is just a badass straight ahead rock album with a little a blues edge. Is worthy of a 5 star rating.

Greatest appreciation I can provide it: When an oblivious songs follower informs me rock is dead, it is just one of the albums I offer to them to demonstrate how wrong they truly are.

Blues is a musical genre known as the folklore of African-American musicians. Its origins are associated with the southern states of the USA, that is the region conventionally called the “deep south”. The very name of the genre (sadness, despair) is related to its nostalgic form, also in the textual layer. Blues pieces touch male-female relationships as well as feelings and emotions (love, loneliness, faithfulness, jealousy). However, blues performers often sing about freedom, work and travel. The songs also feature social criticism relating mainly to racial inequality and political issues.

Many artists are inspired by blues music and combine it with other styles. In this way, such musical mergers as punk blues, soul blues or blues rock. The popularity of this genre in the USA has led to the emergence of regional varieties, such as Louisiana, New Orleans, Texas and Detroit blues. There are also factions characteristic of other countries – British blues and African blues.

    Albert Cummings

Cummings is an American blues musician who is currently signed to Blind Pig Records. He also runs a successful home construction business in his New England home. He has played alongside B.B. King, Johnny Winter, and Buddy Guy.
Albert Cummings recorded his first album in 1999 with his own band Swamp Yankee. The album was titled “The Long Way” and was self-released.
Cummings’ soulful and explosive approach to blues and rock caught the attention of Blind Pig Records, which signed him to a multi-album deal beginning in 2004.

For this label, in 2004, Albert recorded his second album entitled “True To Yourself”.

Two years later, in 2006, Cummings recorded a fourth album Working Man, with new band members.

In 2008, Cummings released a live album Feels So Good, recorded at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. a 95-year-old “little jewel box” – that’s what James Taylor calls it – that’s hosted everyone from Will Rogers to Al Jolson. The audience was so enthralled and supportive they became part of the performance in a way that’s rarely heard. As AllMusic put it, “It sounds like it was one hell of a party that night.”

In 2011 Albert released an instructional DVD for the Hal Leonard Corporation entitled, Working Man Blues Guitar. His 2012 album No Regrets debuted at No. 1 in the U.S., Canada and France on the iTunes Blues Charts and at No. 5 on the Billboard blues charts. In a 2012 interview, he called No Regrets his “best album yet”.

In July 2015, Cummings released Someone Like You, a 12-track Blind Pig album produced by David Z.

In February 2020, Cummings released his 11-track Provogue Records debut titled Believe, produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Gaines. Recorded at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Cummings notes the influence the location had on the process of creating this project, “If I had recorded those same songs anywhere else, then Believe would have sounded like a completely different album.” Arguably one of the most notable tracks on the album is a cover of the song Hold On by legendary soul duo Sam & Dave, illustrating Cummings’ ability to fuse genres while remaining stylistically unique and fresh.

    Keith Richards

He is the guitarist of The Rolling Stones and creator of the band’s most canonical riffs. As a boy, he sang in a church choir and recently wrote a children’s book. Legends say he underwent a complete blood transfusion and sniffed his father’s ashes along with cocaine. He was the hero of numerous alcoholic and drug excesses, but recently he has only allowed himself a glass of wine. And although from a medical point of view he should have been dead a long time, he is doing well.

Beginning in 1964, when the debut album The Rolling Stones was released, he goes the victorious sandpaper. He did this at a time when rock’n’roll was considered a fad of young and short-lived teen rebellion, and not something significant. Nothing worth sacrificing your life. Especially the rock’n’roll that the Stones preferred – embedded in blues, but also flashy, dirty and loud, just like themselves.

He does it today when rock’n’roll is a classic and the Stones dominate.

Richards’ image probably knows everyone who associates even a little bit with what such a phenomenon as rock’n’roll is. The characteristic, now graying hair – the musician cuts himself without looking in the mirror – with a mandatory headband, various bracelets, and pendants, clothes, which, as he emphasizes, steals Patti Hansen, whom he married 35 years ago and lives in New York.

Although Richards is one of the greatest rock legends, a fantastic composer and musician, for some, he will remain degenerate and anti-guitarist for the youth. The hero of a lot of scandals, sensations, gossip, and even legends. Like the one about the blood transfusion, he was supposed to undergo in 1973, in an “underground” Swiss clinic to keep the body fit during a tour in the United States.

    ZZ Top

ZZ Top is an American trio from Texas. The group was founded in 1970. Its members were artists from once competing bands – guitarist Billy Gibbons from the Moving Sidewalks, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard from American Blues.
ZZ Top gained fame thanks to the track “La Grange” from the blues-rock album “Tres Hombres“. The next albums “Deguello”, “El Loco”, “Eliminator” and “Afterburner” also did not go unnoticed. The artists developed a distinctive image – long beards, golf hats and dark glasses.

They started their musical career in the seventies with a sound characterized by blues-rock and south rock while retaining the characteristic hard rock. However, they gained commercial fame in the 1980s with the albums 1983 Eliminator and 1985 Afterburner, in a style closer to electronic rock and with the use of synthesizers. In the nineties they largely returned to the style of the seventies, but without completely losing the ability to use the keys. This partially caused their albums to pull away from the charts, but they regained many of their early followers. In 2012, the group released their fifteenth studio album La Futura, their first work in about ten years, which once again placed them on charts around the world.

With over forty years of music career, they have earned dozens of gold and platinum records, being one of the most successful bands in the south of North America. In the United States alone, they sold approximately 25 million copies, and by 2014 it was estimated that their worldwide sales exceeded 50 million.

Back to the Future Part III

Ever since ZZ Top created his artistic image with huge beards, sunglasses, hats and suits imitating jeans, they have earned their place in the world of film and television. The first appearance of famous names was in 1990 in the movie Back to the Future Part III.

    Death of Dusty Hill

In July 2021, Dusty Hill was forced to leave a tour after a hip injury. ZZ Top performed without him at the Village Commons in New Lenox, Illinois, with Hill’s guitar tech Elwood Francis on bass. Five days later, on July 28, ZZ Top announced that Dusty Hill had died at his home in Houston at the age of 72. Gibbons confirmed that the band would continue with Francis, per Hill’s wishes.

Dust My Broom – from DVD ZZ Top – Live In Germany 1980

Live In Germany features ZZ Top’s 1980 performance at the Grugahalle in Essen for the German TV series Rockpalast. Hot on the heels of their classic Deguello album, the show sees ZZ Top in their essence as the ‘lil ol’ band from Texas’ nickname in a set packed with their early hits.

ZZ Top recorded in 1980 on the music oriented TV show, Rockpalast in Germany. Dusty Hill bass/vocals, Billy Gibbons guitar, Frank Beard drums. The writing credit for “Dust my Broom” is a little fuzzy. It has traditionally gone to Robert Johnson, but publishing of Blues songs from the 20s & 30s was almost non existent. The song was popularized by Elmore James “King of the Slide Guitar”.

Carolyn Wonderland Band – She Wants To Know

Carolyn Wonderland trio plus guests Guy Forsyth and Shelley King play new original songs, a new co-write with Ruthie Foster and covers of Doug Sahm, Lean Russel and Los Labos.

Her first-ever live album is a tasteful 12-song set from shows at Antone’s in Austin, Kessler Theater in Dallas and Last Concert Café in Houston.

    Carolyn Wonderland

… is a triple threat with diverse songwriting, soulful vocals and guitar goddess skills. There is a common reaction when people first hear Carolyn Wonderland, which is best summed up by the LA Times quote: “She’s the real deal.”

The career of this singer-guitarist from Texas has long been marked by the great Janis Joplin born in Texas. Both the selection of the repertoire, the way of interpretation and the color of the voice bring to mind the American rock star who died 41 years ago. Wonderland is not limited by style. In her repertoire, apart from classic blues and rock compositions, you can find elements of funk or gospel.

When a guitarist truly lives for and loves what they do, it shows and shines like a beacon during live performances. Her live show beats any record and her tone is a musical force to be reckoned with.

Wonderland’s instrumental abilities include guitar, slide guitar, mandolin, trumpet, and piano. Although primarily a blues artist, Wonderland likes to incorporate elements of country, swing, zydeco, surf, gospel, soul, and cumbia into her musical mix. She usually performs with Cole El-Saleh on keyboards and Kevin Lance on drums.

Her music includes a bold mix of timeless original songs and reinventions of some of her favorites, ranging from blistering electric blues to deep, heartfelt ballads to cosmic country to soulful Tex-Mex. Every song is fueled by Wonderland’s forceful yet melodic Texas-flavored guitar work and sung with full-throated, heart-on-her-sleeve vocals.

On April 6, 2018, Wonderland joined John Mayall’s band as his first female lead guitarist in his 60+ year career.

Chris Layton of Double Trouble says, “In playing with him (Stevie), there was a thing about him that was very simple. If it felt good, then it WAS good. It was a very trust-your-instincts band. Spontaneous. Didn’t matter if there were some minor performance mistakes. If the spirit was there, and there was fire and the feeling was good, it was happening.”

Eric Clapton says, “I was so bowled over, so in love with this guy that was playing on stage from the heart completely. I started to feel ashamed of what I was going to do.”

Joe Bonamassa says, “Stevie’s legacy is he was the guy who could put on a guitar, any guitar, play three notes and have people hooked… That you can’t teach.”

    Seasick Steve

Steve is living proof that your big break can come at any age. Born Steven Gene Wold in Oakland, California in 1941 – yes, 1941 – Steve has spent his life in transit: he’s been everything from a hobo to a record producer. But he never strayed far from music.

Kicked out of his family home at the age of 14, Steve became a genuine hobo, hopping freights all over America. Always traveling with his guitar – having been taught a few chords as a kid by Delta bluesman KC Douglas, an old pal of the legendary Tommy Johnson – in the ’60s he began to play at clubs on the West Coast and supported Son House among others.

The Allman Brothers Band: Pioneers of Southern Rock and the Beacon Theater Concert of 1992

The Allman Brothers Band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969, was a pioneering force in Southern rock. Founded by brothers Gregg and Duane Allman, the band seamlessly blended blues, country, and jazz into their music, creating a unique sound that would become emblematic of the American South. With their skillful improvisations and long, intricate jam sessions, the band carved a niche for itself and became one of the most influential rock acts of the 20th century.

Duane Allman’s mastery over the slide guitar and Gregg’s soulful voice and powerful songwriting abilities were the heart of the band. Tragically, Duane’s life was cut short in a motorcycle accident in 1971, but the band pressed on, with his spirit forever influencing their music. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the band saw numerous lineup changes and endured various challenges. But their legacy remained intact, driven by timeless hits like “Ramblin’ Man,” “Whipping Post,” and “Jessica.”

One of the band’s most notable traditions began in 1989: their annual residency at The Beacon Theater in New York City. These series of shows became a hallmark for fans, with each concert offering a fresh and unique setlist.

In 1992, during one of these iconic Beacon Theater concerts, the Allman Brothers Band surprised their audience with an unexpected treat: a rare all-acoustic rendition of the blues standard “Come On In My Kitchen.” Originally written and performed by Robert Johnson, this song is a cornerstone of blues music. Hearing the Allman Brothers Band play it was a testament to their deep roots in the blues tradition. Their acoustic performance, filled with raw emotion and soul, was a standout moment, reminding fans of the band’s versatility and profound connection to the roots of American music.

This Beacon Theater concert was later immortalized in the double album “Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theater 1992.” This record captures the Allman Brothers Band in their element, delivering breathtaking live performances and showcasing their unmatched musicianship. The rendition of “Come On In My Kitchen” remains a standout track, a reminder of the band’s commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of blues music.

In conclusion, the Allman Brothers Band’s impact on the world of rock and their profound connection to the blues make them one of the most significant bands in American music history. The 1992 Beacon Theater concert and their acoustic take on “Come On In My Kitchen” is a shining example of their timeless appeal and the depth of their musical roots.
